Our experience with the camera was positive and here are my thoughts on why a non-pro might want to consider this over a 5D.

It’s much easier than the complexity of shooting with a DSLR. Even someone with limited knowledge of video can make some decent looking footage. Here is what we shoot.

Asset tracking refers to tracking physical assets. You can scan barcode tags attached to the asset RFID tag, which broadcast its location, to locate your item.

Problem:

I have a lot of video equipment such as cables, mics, lights, stands, gels, LCD’s and cameras.  I started to realize that not all of my equipment made it back to the office after every shoot. As you know, it does not take but a few random items to vanish to cost you thousands of dollars. So, I decide that I needed to research asset tracking software to track and keep-up with all of the equipment.

Warning:

Most asset tracking solutions are expensive and complicated. If you’re like me, you don’t have time to deal with a hard-to-use system. As I was shopping for a mobile asset tracking software solution ease of use and cost were my two main concerns. I also needed a mobile solution since we are on the road shooting video several times a month.

Conclusion:

My few weeks of research led me down many expensive and complicated paths. Then I stumbled on a company called Wasp Barcode Technologies. Wasp caters to small businesses and easy-to-use products so I gave it a try. Their asset tracking solution is simple to use and very inexpensive, so I’m happy. The system paid for itself the first shoot. One day we loaded everything in the van when I checked the inventory and realized that we had a missing tripod worth $1,000. I went back inside and found it sitting in a corner. Asset tracking is now a major part of my routine before and after a video shoot. This process also helps me remember what I have so I can better write-off equipment for taxes.

Suggestion:

Do your homework before you purchase any asset tracking products. Even if you don’t have a movie studio’s worth of equipment, you still might benefit from having more organization and employee accountability for your video equipment.

5 Reason’s

1. Stock is sometimes necessary
   Most of the time I do not like using stock video lower thirds and intros but sometimes it’s necessary if you want to fully capture your audience. If your in a crunch and need the video to pop but do not have a lot of time don’t be afraid to use stock for smaller clients and projects.
2. Music sets the entire tone
   For the past few years, I’ve mostly created training videos. This project reminded me that music is very powerful and you should never forget what good or bad music can do to the overall impact of your video.
3. Video SEO
   Texas Football is beyond competitive. I would even say that it’s more advanced and competitive than most business keywords. I really had to sharpen my skills to get the video to show up. When thinking about Video SEO remember that the title tag, description, keywords are the most important. Another huge advantage is Google Video sitemaps.

4. Viral Video Distribution
   Make sure that you put up your videos on many sites not just Youtube. The demographic with this video is much different then my typical videos. Research and understand where your demographic is watching online.
5. Finally, I’m getting old
   I’m only 34 but WOW, I have no idea what is cool anymore. This reminded me that when creating projects outside of your demographic, ALWAYS get advice from the demographic your targeting.
